HARDWOOD

The use of wood for construction stretches back centuries. Hardwood flooring dates back to the Middle Ages, in a time when such a thing was not standardized and beautifully inlaid designs were a thing of luxury, only experienced by the wealthiest. Now, hardwood floors come in a variety of styles, species, and surface types as well as eco-friendly options that all walks of life can enjoy. The next question to ask yourself, is: solid or engineered?

Solid hardwood is manufactured from a single piece of wood and is a wholly natural product that will react to humidity and moisture. It’s not unusual to see hardwood expand under warm and humid conditions. Engineered hardwood flooring on the other hand consists of two or more layers with the top being a wood veneer while the lower layer consists of plywood, HDF, or even solid wood. Engineered hardwood flooring offers stability through the seasons, as it will maintain its look with the reduced possibility of warping. Costs will vary depending on the plank size, the general price of lumber and, with engineered hardwood, the quality of glues used.
